DEEPER THAN MIDNIGHT
by Lara Adrian
Series: Midnight Breed, Book 9
Genre: Paranormal Romance
At eighteen, Corinne Bishop was a beautiful, spirited young woman living a life of privilege as the adopted daughter of a wealthy family. Her world changed in an instant when she was stolen away and held prisoner by the malevolent vampire Dragos. After many years of captivity and torment, Corinne is rescued by the Order, a cadre of vampire warriors embroiled in a war against Dragos and his followers. Her innocence taken, Corinne has lost a piece of her heart as well—the one thing that gave her hope during her imprisonment, and the only thing that matters to her now that she is free.
Assigned to safeguard Corinne on her trip home is a formidable golden-eyed Breed male called Hunter. Once Dragos’s most deadly assassin, Hunter now works for the Order, and he’s hell-bent on making Dragos pay for his manifold sins. Bonded to Corinne by their mutual desire, Hunter will have to decide how far he’ll go to end Dragos’s reign of evil—even if carrying out his mission means shattering Corinne’s tender heart.
Hunter has always been my favorite Breed warrior since we first met him. Although Hunter is a Gen-One, he is completely different than all the other Breed warriors. He was created by Dragos, which means Hunter was the product of the Ancient Gen-One raping a breed mate. Hunter was created to become the perfect assassin void of all emotions. He was tortured and beaten and forced to follow Dragos' every command. But Hunter escaped Dragos and teamed up with the Order to help stop Dragos once and for all.
Corinne is one of many breedmates that were kidnapped by Dragos. She was rescued by the Order in the last book "Taken by Midnight". Corinne wants nothing more than to go home and be with her parents. She hopes to enlist her father's help in finding something that Dragos stole from her while she was a prisoner. This is the only thing that made Corinne bare the torture and rapes she endured. She will stop at nothing to find what was stolen from her.
Hunter agrees to return Corinne to her family. Only when they get there, Hunter suspects things are really not what they seem. Corinne is left devastated and heart-broken and Hunter plans to return her to the Order to keep her safe and help her find what she lost. I think Hunter and Corrine were compatible because they both know the horrors the other experienced at the hands of Dragos. It was nice to see Hunter finally get his HEA, although I wish the sparks were more explosive between the two of them.
We also get to see more into Chase, since his book, Darker After Midnight will be up next in January 2012. All I have to say is, poor Chase. Just when you think he couldn't fall any lower, he does. He really has a lot of redeeming to do in his book, although he does start at the end of Deeper.
The Midnight Breed series is also another of my top favorite series. I've loved every book in the series so far and Deeper Than Midnight was no different. My only complaint, like I said above is, I just wish the chemistry was a little more between Corinne and Hunter. I cannot wait to read Darker After Midnight to see all of the loose ends tied up.
